It's not a walkinshaw gearknob mate. Walkinshaw gearknobs have nothing written on them.

Yeah, the walky gear knob has no indentation on it, I recon its from the dark blue sv88 model as mentioned.

G'day guys, ok just to clear this up Ive just had a look in a couple of HSV books that I have:" HSV 1988-1991 A complete guide to Holden Special Vehicles" Joe Kenwright-Richard Reid, which details all available options for the HSV range along with specifications. The VL CALAIS SV88 was fitted with a 3 speed Trimatic M40 transmission only, there was no option for a manual transmission. Also the SV88 was fitted with a dark blue momo leather steering wheel (the gear knob I have is black).

"Holden Commodore Performance Handbook-from VL to VP(1986-1993)" Eric Blair, which also details the HSV VL range, within the transmission specs it lists the only V8 model HSV VL that was fitted with a manual transmission was the 1988 GROUP A SS. All other V8 models were fitted with a 3 speedTrimatic automatic.

" HSV 1988-1991 A complete guide to Holden Special Vehicles" Joe Kenwright-Richard Reid, there is also HSV add which was released around the time of the Walkinshaw release which shows this gear knob but states "will suit all HSV models with manual transmission (except VN GROUP A)"

Im not trying to start any arguments, im only stating what information I have found in regards to the HSV VL range. Feel free to add any input or information you guys may have found. I have no answer for why some Walky's have no embossment and others do, maybe this was a factory option, but at the end of the day the above statement that this gear knob is off a SV88 or VN Group A is incorrect.

If anybody has intrest in this item please feel free to contact me either through this forum or ebay.

Cheers,
Brad.

how do u know its off a vl? and not a different model?

I too as well as many others have the books you have referred to. I agree I am wrong with the assumption that its from the blue sv88. But I know the gear knob for a walky lacks the embossment as shown. It would be interesting to know whether its from a particular model or aftermarket from HSV at the time?

Yeh very true, maybe it is from a particular model or aftermarket HSV, but at the end of the day it came off a walky and It wont fit a VN GROUP A, and VP HSV's onwards, correct me if im wrong, had the HSV lion head embossed into the gear knob. So I still believe its a genuine walky gear knob.

Cheers.

Because it was ordered brand new from HSV specificly for a Walky. And it doesnt fit VN onwards.

I have here the exact same gearknob that you are advertising along with a VL SS Group A (A9L) one and also what you refer to as the VP onwards style with the helmet and lion logo and can tell you that they will all fit onto the same shaft diameter. Now the VN SS Group A may be a different shaft but then again it is the only HSV of that era that used a ZF Gearbox. The rest of the manual cars were all Borg Warner T5's and the gearknobs were interchangeable between them.
The SV momo gearknob can be found on many of the HSV enhanced VN's that went under the SV banner at the time. I have never seen an SV gearknob on a genuine low km Walkinshaw but i can fully understand that HSV would have supplied you with the SV type if you had asked for a replacement gearknob as that was probably all they had at the time to suit with the originals being no longer available.

My car is one of the last numbered cars and sold new in NZ and it has an embossed gearknob but i did buy the car second hand with about 70,000k's and it was the only Walkinshaw I had ever seen before that time so i know no different.I've own the car for about 11years and have only seen about four or five since

Info - my old VS Senator 6 speed had a Helmet/Lion embossed loggo gear knob from new.

For what it's worth, my understanding is that the gear knobs on Walkies were not embossed.

what build number is your car, mine is 710 and has nothing embossed on the gearknob. i have seen a fair few low kilometre cars that have never been touched and not one of them has had anything embossed on the gearknob, all of them have been plain

My 456 had the plain knob & my VN SV had the one pictured above with the logo in it. Incidently I still have both - knobs that is, they are both up for grabs. Email me @ colin.twr@bigpond.com.au
